The bat spectrum chart provides insight into the small but important differences between each blade. Factors such as swell depth, edge size, spine profile, sweet spot position and overall volume all influence how a bat performs and feels in the hands. Different combinations of these characteristics allow GM to develop bats suited to different playing styles, preferences and conditions.
Each GM shape is defined by measurable profile characteristics, including maximum swell depth (S) and maximum edge size (E). Across the range, shapes vary and, whilst these differences may look small, they affect how wood is distributed through the blade, which in turn influences pickup, balance, hitting area and overall feel.
It is always worth remembering, however, that the conditions you play cricket in are a major consideration when choosing a bat. Adapting to your surroundings may not only influence the way you play, but also the type of equipment that best supports your game.
Pitches that offer limited pace and bounce may mean that even a back-foot player, who would normally prefer a higher sweet spot, benefits from a bat with a sweet spot positioned closer to the middle of the blade. Conversely, on surfaces that provide greater carry and pace, a slightly higher sweet spot may prove more effective, even for players who generally favour front-foot play.
Cricket is a game of trial and error, and bat selection is often one of the most personal decisions a player makes. The bat used by your favourite professional may be perfect for their technique, but that does not necessarily mean it is the right choice for you. The best way to know for sure is to pick the bat up, assess the pickup and balance, and, where possible, spend time using it in practice.
